When Maza was little, we noticed something unusual.
She slept through the entire night. No matter what. Curled up on the bed, usually pressed against one of us, she would simply switch off until morning.
That surprised me. Every dog I had before her had been a rescue from the street — light sleepers, night patrol officers, half-awake guardians of imaginary threats.
Dachshunds, however, operate differently.
Even as a round-bellied puppy, Maza would find the softest, warmest, darkest corner and disappear until sunrise.
And then we noticed something else.
Every evening around 9:30, she would begin circling the bed, digging slightly, nudging us with her nose, trying to wedge herself underneath someone. If we were lying down, she would insistently push her way under.
It took me a while to understand.
She didn’t want to move us.
She wanted to be covered.
And to this day, she cannot properly fall asleep unless she is wrapped in a blanket, tucked close to one of us.
She is not alone.
All four of our dachshunds share this deep, almost obsessive love for burrowing.

1. The Burrow Instinct
Dachshunds were originally bred to hunt badgers and other burrowing animals. Their job was to enter narrow, dark tunnels without hesitation.
Over generations, they were selected to feel confident — even comfortable — underground.
That instinct never disappeared.
A blanket recreates the same environment:
- enclosed
- dim
- secure
- close to a trusted pack member
To a dachshund, burrowing under a blanket isn’t strange behavior.
It’s returning to a den.
Their love of burrowing is even stronger in winter, since dachshunds are sensitive to cold.
2. Warmth and Body Temperature
Dachshunds have short legs and long bodies that sit low to the ground.
Cold floors, drafts, and winter air affect them quickly.
Despite being bred for outdoor hunting, modern dachshunds are enthusiastic lovers of warmth and comfort.
A blanket provides:

- heat retention
- protection from drafts
And somehow, they manage to spend entire nights under covers without suffocating — a small evolutionary miracle.
3. Your Scent = Safety
Blankets carry your scent.
For a dachshund — who is usually deeply attached to their person — this is calming and reassuring.
Burrowing under something that smells like you combines:
- physical warmth
- emotional security
- instinctual denning
It’s the ultimate relaxation formula.
And after emerging from their blanket cave, some immediately proceed to dramatic dachshund jumping off bed maneuvers.
When Is Burrowing a Concern?
In most cases, burrowing is completely normal.
However, you may want to observe more closely if your dachshund:
- hides constantly
- avoids interaction
- seems lethargic
- trembles excessively
Burrowing for comfort is one thing. Hiding due to discomfort or illness is another.
Creating a Safe Burrowing Space
Since dachshunds will burrow anyway — on beds, couches, or under decorative throws — it helps to give them appropriate options.
Some owners prefer dedicated burrowing beds designed like soft caves or hooded nests.
Others choose larger plush donut-style beds where dogs can dig and circle before settling.
